To serve, she passed a tub of almond butter around the table along with a jug of maple syrup. As Stacy made the batter for the pancakes, which she did in three individual bowls - each bowl receiving 1 egg, 1/2 cup quick-cooking oats, ground flax seed, cinnamon, sliced banana, water, and a scoop of protein powder - she explained why she had started making them: she had recently turned 50 and for health reasons, she needed to incorporate more protein into her diet, particularly in the morning.Īs the batter rested, she heated up 3 large nonstick skillets, spritzed them with cooking spray, then poured the contents of each bowl into each skillet: yes, she made three giant pancakes (photo below) and, using a giant spatula, she turned these pancakes out with the proficiency of a short-order cook. ![]() ![]() I have to confess, on the first morning, when Stacy asked if I would like a gluten-free, high-protein pancake for breakfast, I was skeptical: if you know me, you know I live for toast.īut I love trying new things, and I love seeing how other people cook. Pratt was inspired by Joseph Conrad, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Jack London, but even more directly by Henry de Vere Stacpool’s Blue Lagoon, from which the author got the idea of a small island in the Pacific which he named “Escondida.” The Ballad of the Salty Sea is also hailed as the first example of the literary comic strip. Although Vol 11 in this new series, this is the first in chronological order. Here we also meet the young and beautiful Pandora, her brother Cain, the mysterious criminal mastermind Monk, the grim and ferocious Rasputin, Lieutenant Slutter of the German Navy, and the natives Skull and Tarao. Corto is just one of a strong ensemble cast of characters whose lives permeate the entire 12-book series. Originally serialized beginning in 1967, this book is universally acknowledged as Hugo Pratt’s masterpiece, in which he introduces Corto Maltese to the world. Pin-Up & Adult –You must be 18 or older. ![]() ![]() ![]() Chichester's voyage was the inspiration for the first singlehanded nonstop around-the-world race two years later, and the world of voyaging has never looked back. ![]() ![]() This magnificent 28,000-mile voyage, completed in May 1967, established new records for speed and endurance, captured the imagination of the world, and earned a knighthood for Chichester after his return. ![]() Only nine yachts had previously circumnavigated by way of Cape Horn, and of them six had been capsized or somersaulted at least once. Francis Chichester, at age 65, set out alone from Plymouth in his 53-foot ketch Gypsy Moth IV in August 1966 and sailed eastward around the world through the wild Southern Ocean, stopping only once (the first to accomplish this), in Sydney. The voyages might circle the world or circle Long Island Sound, but each one alters its narrator and, thanks to the power of its telling, the reader. However fascinating those stories are - and however much in vogue - The Sailor's Classics plow a different furrow, retracing the birth and development of small-boat voyaging over the past century-plus, as experienced and related by small crews or lone sailors. or government-sponsored voyages of exploration to Antarctica or the Northwest Passage. The Sailor's Classics are not books about the old sailing navies, or whaling voyages. This is Volume 1 in The Sailor's Classics series which is the sailing canon with Raban as arbiter: books that altered the shape of small-boat voyaging and exert a telling influence to this day. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The self-deprecation that emerges in this book reveals the astonishing fact that Stephen Fry too lacks inner self-assurance - in spite of his cultured, funny, 'Renaissance Man' persona. He says that it cannot be wondered at that his own rather shy hero, Alan Bennett, is so greatly loved. In an audio book this is a special delight. It's rare to find a book where every sentence is satisfying, funny or moving. You can hear their voices and each is treated with affectionate glee. Nearly all the radio and television heroes of that era are there. It's also an insider's look at the way comedy changed and grew in the eighties. He always brings himself (and us) back from the brink with a throw-away line of such ludicrous self-mockery that, if most react as I did, the loudness of your own laughter comes as quite a shock. ![]() None of this is solemn or toe-curling though. In the course of telling the part of his story that stretches from Cambridge to the fame and fortune of his later twenties, he shares with us some of the thoughts and inner fears that he says still haunt him. It makes the price of this book seem far too low. He confides, entertains, shocks, confesses, delights, enlightens - rather than merely narrates. To say that an extra dimension is given by Stephen Fry's voice would be an understatement. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Several generations of Brazilian children were hooked and educated by his marvelous stories, which seems never to lose currency. I wouldn’t say these characters are particularly likable, safe for Jess-she has had a rough life and she is truly concerned about her brother. ![]() ![]() Each of the characters have something to hide. The CharactersĪs per typical with the author’s other novels, we read the story from several different perspectives including Jess Nick, the seemingly nice guy friend of Ben Sophie, the sophisticated wife of a wealthy man Mimi, an isolated twenty-something and the mysterious concierge (I don’t think we ever get her name). As Jess searches for Ben, she soon realizes she left her troubles behind only to find some more sinister ones ahead. ![]() None of the other apartment residents are much help and they all seem to be hiding something. What’s the Story AboutĪfter running away from her toxic job, Jess leaves behind London and arrives in Paris to stay with her half-brother, Ben. I did feel, however, some of the characters felt a little flat and that took away from the story for me. I was also surprised at one big reveal in particular. So I was eager to read her latest novel, The Paris Apartment, and thought the setting was vivid, unique and somewhat spooky. ![]() |
